Local pipe dent repair?
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:25:43 am »
Is there anyone locally who does pipe dent repair?  I found http://piperepair.com , and it looks like they do good work, but it'd be $15 for shipping each way.

There are articles on Thumpertalk on how to do it. Seems simple enough, i will be repairing mine this winter.

Sounds good.  I found the article, so maybe I will give it a shot.  Z I might have to borrow your homemade tools for it, you seem to be pretty good at engineering crap like that.  My best attempts are usually not great.

My friend has all the stuff to do it. I can take it to him. He would probably not charge me, but if he does it's gonna be $20I would guess. Basically you plug the ends, pressurize, and heat with the torch. It's the pressure and heat thing that requires experience.

Thanks, I will probably take you up on that.  I figure I'll need to buy all the stuff to do it and it will cost me at least that much for the tools for a job i may need to do one time.

Old thread, but I saw at the races yesterday that the guy who does suspension there (Steve Mathewson) also will do pipe dent repair.  He charges $20 for that.

Steve is my suspension guy and he does GREAT work.

Quig (the giant guy at Hogback) lives in Macedon and also does pipe repair.

+1 for Steve. I highly recommend him. I need to find someone who can plug the dual header on a ktm. My pipe is dented pretty good.

For dented 4-stroke head pipes, some have been know to fill them with water, plug the ends, and put them in the freezer.

The problem with the KTM header with the 2 into 1 is that there isnt enough room for 2 plugs.

Good to know someone really local does it.  I have a really dented one that I would like to fix at some point.  And Sunday I put a dent in my previously non-dented one :)

Steve's sign said he did both two strokes and four strokes. I didn't inquire beyond reading the sign, though.

The problem with the KTM header with the 2 into 1 is that there isnt enough room for 2 plugs.

I knew a guy who took a dent out of a 2004 450 EXC header (I sold him the bike).  He only put enough water in to have about 1/2 to 1" on either side of the dent (no plugs necessary).  He froze, thawed, re-filled, and froze again 5 times to get the dent out.

It's worth a try in my opinion.
