Palmyra Harescramble 2010 - 11/7
« on: October 25, 2010, 11:32:35 am »
The event flier has been posted, so here is the thread to go with it.

http://palmyramx.com/2010/2010%20PRA%20HS%20Flyer.pdf

Note the start times are an hour earlier this year.

They've added a 1.4 mile grass track section this year.  That should be sweet.

Some more info on this:
There is a new flier up, and the change is that the gates are open for signup on Saturday night, from 5 pm - 9 pm.  Not that that helps most of you guys since you're farther away, but I thought I'd let you know in case anyone was going to be in the area then and wanted to avoid the lines on Sunday.  I'm probably going to go up there Saturday and sign up, but I live 10 minutes away.

Also I talked to one of the board members (at my gym) and the grass track is described as "huge".  It's in the bean field that we normally cut across.  I also heard that there are some really fast sections.  He described them as "65 mph sections" but he tends to exaggerate a bit. :)

In other words, this epic event just got a lot more epic.

i am not sure if i will make it or not yet. ill decide if i feel well enough before the race. i went to the doctor today but did not go for an xray. i may have a small rib fracture and at the very least seperated muscle tissue and internal bruising, which could hurt for up to 12 weeks. i was told to get rest and that riding would definitely not help. however she did not say riding would hurt me worse either and i made it through a fast riding day at majestic so i may load up on ibuprofens and go for it.

I'm pretty sure I broke my ribs at the 1st area51 gp race. I didnt bother to go get xrays or to have it looked at. I assumed the dr would tell me the same thing they told you and I didn't feel the need to pay them to tell me that. Wrap yourself with an ace bandage and take pain killers. I used alieve. It hurt to breathe/laugh/sneeze/move for a solid 4 weeks.

i raced the GP last year with a fractured shin, and a sprained ankle. no more complaining!

hogback is one of those races you just have to do. its a great location, its fun a fun, and all your friends will be talking about it. go and ride, right on the edge of killing yourself, you will have fun.

Just a note that wrapping for broken ribs is no longer done.  The reason is that it often leads to Pneumonia.  People don't breath deeply enough when wrapped.  If you are going to use an ace bandage, only use it for the first few days to get by and then go without.  I know it hurts like heck, but you'll be better off in the long run.

As far as going to the doc, outside of hearing the same advice, the one thing an x-ray does is confirm if the rib is lined up or not.  That's kind of critical as you don't want a sharp bone poking anything.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor, emt, etc.

And I'll be there this weekend. Weather looks good and I'm looking forward to a fun ride and meeting some folks.

Thanks, I read that out loud last night and might now end up with a hot tub.  LOL probably not but my wife liked the idea.

+1000 to this. I  remember going in 2007 to watch it when Tim did it.  I was kicking myself after the first few minutes wishing I had raced it.  In retrospect it probably wouldn't have been a good idea since I didn't know what the hell I was doing but the next year I was ready.

Go out, and set a goal of doing X laps.  Last year my goal was 2 in under 2 hours, I ended up with three in just over 2 hours.  This year I'm going for 3 in under 2 hours.

And I'll be there this weekend. Weather looks good and I'm looking forward to a fun ride and meeting some folks.

You will like it I think.  It's a bit easier than the typical WNYOA race.  I think most of us are racing Novice, with the exception of two who I think are doing expert.

Hum...I might actually bring the 450.  I haven't raced it as yet and would really like to get a feel for how it compares to the 250.

There's been a couple times now where the 250 has left me a bit wanting, although there hasn't been anything yet that it hasn't gotten me through.

My biggest problems are learning to ride again (it's been 30 years), getting in decent enough shape, and being to much of a Mr. Nice guy during a race.

At motor masters, I must have helped 4 or 5 out of mud up to their axles and I stayed with one young kid who thought he broke his ankle for almost a half hour.   I'm sure I could have gotten in a second lap in.  As it was, I was the last bike in.

Then to add insult to injury, they scored me as a DNF. ;D

Really I think you'd be fine on either of your bikes.  There is at least one guy we know who is running a 450 in the race but he is aggressive and keeps it moving so he doesn't have any issues with overheating.  I know another guy who ran a 450 in this race two years in a row but same thing, he is aggressive.

Their tight stuff is tight so the 250 would do well there too

Looks like you guys will have nice weather. Partly sunny and 46*. I hope Area51 will have the same luck next week.
